AFAS PRESS HOLDS JOURNALISM WORKSHOP

The Association of Faculty of Arts (AFAS) Press has held the 2021 edition of the annual journalism workshop with the theme: Catching up with the Evolving Phases of Journalism. The workshop which took place in the Postgraduate lecture room (Room 71) in the Faculty of Arts was held on Saturday, October 2nd, 2021.

Experienced journalists, Ifedayo Ogunyemi and Ibrahim Alawode, were invited to speak to the campus journalists who were in attendance on the topics: Ethical News Gathering and Reporting and Fact-Checking.

Ifedayo Ogunyemi, a journalist at Nigerian Tribune, spoke on Ethical News Gathering and Reporting. He listed and explained the ethics that campus journalists should follow when gathering news and reporting, some of which were gathering information from reliable sources, avoidance of copyright plagiarism, and non-disclosure of information sources. “Do not disclose the sources of your sources of information so as not to expose them to danger,” he said.

Ibrahim Alawode, who is a journalist at Premium Times, educated the campus journalists on fact-checking and its processes. He explained why it matters and its differences and similarities with news and verification.

Other guests that were present were the Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan (UCJUI) President, Rauf Fasilat, and the Vice-president (Editorial) Kareem Shamsudeen.
