AFAS AGS Remains In Office — AFAS FLC

Following the earlier AFAS PRESS report on the indefinite suspension of the Assistant General Secretary (AGS) of the Association of Faculty of Arts Student’s’ (AFAS) by the AFAS Executive Council, the FLC has made her position know on the issue.

In a rejoinder sent out, the legislative council maintained that the President of the association does not possess any constitutional right to suspend any members of the executive council, adding that the recent development is an abuse of power.

“The President possesses no constitutional right to suspend any member of the Council nor does the Council possess any constitutional right to suspend any member of the Council. Hence, it is an abuse of power by the President of the association and constitutional measures shall be taken by the House as soon as possible,” the letter reads in part.

“Whether the AGS is guilty of the allegations is not the immediate concern as the House has not investigated the matter, but the president has imposed upon himself the powers strictly possessed by the FLC and Congress. This is undemocratic. Due processes were put in place to avoid any slight show of autocratic tendency and to assure fairness,” it further stated.
