SEALS CUP: Faculty of Arts Teams Struggle in Match Day One

The much-coveted SEALS Cup, being one of the biggest and sensational sporting events in the University of Ibadan commenced with an opening ceremony on the 26th of July 2024. In fact, at this point, almost every single one of the 32 registered teams, has played a match in their group stages.

Interestingly, the Faculty of Arts is ably represented by five teams, from five departments in the faculty, namely, the Department of Classics, the Department of English, the Department of History, the Department of Linguistics, and the Department of Philosophy. More interesting is the fact that, of these five teams in the faculty, the defending champion of the SEALS Cup happens to be one of these teams, which is the Department of Philosophy, a.k.a. Plato Academy. However, the tides are yet to flow in favour of teams from the Faculty of Arts, there has been no single win so far that the Faculty can boast of from any of her representatives in the SEALS CUP competition.

Although, teams from the faculty have tried their best to put up a good performance in these matches, but it clearly seems not to be enough to secure a winning spot for them. A match ended goalless, the match between Classics and Petroleum Engineering ended goalless, while the rest were not without goals, which have not been enough to secure a winning spot for any Faculty of Arts team. Teams like the Department of Linguistics seem to understand how languages work, but somehow, the language of goals seems to evade them, which led to a tragic non-response to 5 (five) goals from the Department of Industrial Production Academy (IPE). 

Although, the Faculty of Technology seems to be portending itself as a nemesis to the Faculty of Arts, as all matches, which happen to be the opening matches for the Faculty of Arts team pitched against them, have ended without a win. However, Philosophy’s encounter today, 2nd August, 2024, with the Elect-Elect team, has reminded the Faculty of Technology that the Plato Academy still remains the defending champion, as their match ended in 2 philosophical questions the electricians were helpless with, not everything is about wires, asking questions are important. Hence, the Plato Academy’s 2 goals sealing match against the electricians, has finally broken the Jinx. Expectations now lie on other teams in the faculty to keep up the wining pace, as the winning door has been opened.
