UI’SU Suspends Planned Congress Till Further Notice, Cites Alleged Harassment on its Officials

University of Ibadan Students’ Union has suspended the Students’ Congress earlier scheduled to hold on Saturday May 17, 2025.

The development took a new dimension due to an alleged incident that occurred at the Kunle Adepeju Building which saw some students harassing some Union officials, leading to the General Secretary sustaining injury in his arm.

As contained in the release made by the Students’ Union, it stated that the postponement was a step in the right direction, raising concerns about the safety and security of the Union executives and the integrity of the Congress.

“This decision has become necessary in light of recent events. Earlier today, a group of students visited the Students’ Union Building to engage with the Union Executives namely The President , The General Secretary, and The Public Relations Officer. While they were welcomed and their questions were entertained and addressed in good faith, the engagement with these students suddenly took an aggressive turn. As the Union officials were set to take their leave from the President’s office, these students harrassed and blocked the way forcefully for minutes; preventing the Union officials from taking their leave to attend to other important engagements demanding immediate attention. In the process, the General Secretary sustained an injury to his arm.”, the release reads in part.

Condemning the alleged harassment and attack, it stated that “the incident had raised a significant concerns about the safety and security of our members and as well, the integrity of the planned Congress.”

“Under these circumstances, we unfortunately cannot proceed with the Congress at this time. The safety and well-being of all students are our utmost priority, and we will not convene a gathering where there is a perceived risk of disruption. As a result, we are left with no other decision but to lay the Congress on the table until further notice. We will continue to monitor the situation and will reconvene when assured of a safe and conducive environment for all members to participate without any fear or threat.”

Recall that the SRC made a resolution that UI’SU should call for a Congress at the sitting held on Saturday 10th of May 2025, to address certain issues, including the issue of fee hike and discrepancies.
