REPORT: UI’SRC Rejects Executive Committee’s Call for Disciplinary Committee Reconstitution, Re-sit

The University of Ibadan Students Representative Council, at its fifth emergency sitting on Tuesday, September 30, voted to reject the executive committee’s request for the reconstitution and the re-sit of the disciplinary committee, which is currently investigating multiple allegations of financial misconduct against the administration.

At the sitting, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Shoge Quadri, called the attention of members to a letter submitted by the executive committee on Saturday, September 27th. The letter requested the need for the reconstitution and the re-sit of the disciplinary committee, citing “a constitutional oversight.”

According to the executive committee, the General Secretary, who was supposed to represent the executive committee, had been suspended due to alleged financial misconduct and was therefore unable to fulfill his role. The Odedele Covenant-led executive committee described this as a constitutional breach.

The entire long debate was centered on Article XXVII, Section (e) of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union Constitution, which stipulates that members of the disciplinary committee shall consist of the Chief Whip as a member, a member of the Executive Committee, and three elected members of Council.”

However, after an extensive debate, Honourable members voted an opposing stance, citing the reconstitution would amount to double representation for the executives and would undermine the constitution. Hon. Qudus’ motion to annul the request received the support of thirty-three (33) members, sealing the decision of the House.
