The deputy vice chancellor, Research, Innovation and Strategic partnership, University of Ibadan, Olanike Adeyemo has advised students also be thoughtful and productive citizens rather than being job seekers only.
She said this while speaking at the 3rd Staff seminar series recently at Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan. The seminar titled, Integrating the 21st century university into a knowledge society through research, innovation and strategic partnerships was organized by the University of Ibadan Institute of African Studies in collaboration with the Council for The Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA).
Adeyemo mentioned that the traditional role of the university needs to be felt in the society while its training must be geared towards multi-disciplinary progress. “Research should be about collaboration which would create new learning ways and proffer solutions to issues”, she added.
While speaking on the efforts so far, she revealed that policy review, teaching and student development with schemes such as Geo-hackaton, Eye initiative, Beyond smart masterclass programme, Young professional boot camp and also partnership with firms have been put in place whilst creating instant employment giving training and boost of confidence.
She however disclosed that the successes so far are not without challenges. According to her, the limitations the administration have faced so far include internalization of standards, non-existence of informal mentorship, and deficient internal collaboration. She concluded by stating the need for effective teaching, actively cultivated strategic partnership and developing course to suit societal needs.
