CHLOROQUINE, AMPICILLIN MAY CAUSE INFERTILITY, PROF. RAJI SAYS

Professor Yinusa Raji, a professor of the Faculty of Basic Medical Science has said that chloroquine, ampicillin may cause infertility urging that they should be used under a medical practitioner’s prescription.
He said this while delivering the 41st Inaugural lecture of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences titled, Benevolence or malevolence: The curious wonder of natural agents on reproductive physiology at Trenchard hall, University of Ibadan recently.
While delivering the lecture, he said that 50% of men aged between 40-70 years worldwide are suffering from erectile dysfunction and that if this continues, by 2025, there will be 322 million infertile men worldwide.
He added that natural agents like Carpolobia Lutea also known as egbo oshunshun in Yoruba and Cattle stick in English, Sphenocentrum, Tridax procumbens also known as Coat buttons can help ameliorate erectile dysfunction, thereby enhancing sexual performance and also cure ailments like cancer, diabetes, malaria and can also be used as contraception. While drugs like Nicotine, Caffeine, Chloroquine and Ampicillin should be under a medical practitioner’s prescription.
He concluded that the government should fund the health sector in order to provide a conducive research environment and also to help standardize these products and appropriately integrate them with orthodox medicine.
