By Kehinde Soetan and Iswat Jinad
The department of Crop Protection and Environmental Biology, Faculty of Agriculture, holds her Inaugural Lecture on Thursday 4th of October 2018 at Trenchard Hall University of Ibadan.
The lecture, titled “Understanding of Plants: A Key to Crop Yield” was delivered by Prof. A. O. TOGUN, a professor of Crops Physiology from the department of Crop Protection and Environmental Biology, spoke on the functions and processes of plant yield which he stated as biological and economical.
He also went further to expatiate on the influence of environmental factors in crop yield and adding that climate change was a phenomenon that expresses meaningful and continuous alteration in crop production.
He also mentioned the effects of Organic fertilizer in the environment.
At the end of the lecture, Prof. Togun recommended that there should be adequate orientation of farmers on climatic change; the adoption of cultural practices which include proper planting time, adequate plant environment are necessary for the improved crop yield. He also recommended that especially to crop yield and farmers’ adoption of method that will improve yields and that research on crop should include not only crop physiologist but also ecologist, sociologists, soil scientist, agricultural extensionist among others as no single expert has a complete answer to crop yield improvement, which involves a complete understanding of plants.
