A NEW SEMESTER: OUR EXPECTATIONS

Dear reader,

It has been a while. I should ask how the break was, but some of us had no break. Nonetheless, welcome to a packed semester! Let’s discuss our expectations for this semester.

First, we expect this semester to be hitch-free and super fast. We hope ASUU does not make true those rumours flying about. We won’t like a repetition of what happened last year. Those three months were frustrating for some of us.

Second, we expect to have a more conducive and encouraging learning environment as renovations have been made in the faculty and some others are ongoing. Kudos to the faculty management. We should, however, use these facilities responsibly bearing in mind that any damage would not only affect us, but also others to come.

Also, we pray our timetables are favourable, especially GES classes. Some of us want our weekends to begin on Thursday; we do not want anything to disrupt our weekend plans.

Bells of activities and events have been ringing in our ears even before resumption: Super Bowl, Convocation, Jaw war, Christmas and New year festivities, Hall weeks and dinners, Departmental weeks and dinners, Faculty dinners, and to top it all, the upcoming Departmental, Faculty and Students’ Union elections. This semester promises to be exciting, but let us bear in mind that at the end of the tingling party bells, the bells of tests and more importantly, examinations would certainly also ring. While trying to have as much fun as we can, let us not neglect our academics. It is our primary assignment here. We must not forget to do assignments, meet deadlines, study for tests, and prepare well for exams.

On the other hand, expectations are really high as regards Hall, Departmental and Faculty weeks and dinners. We anticipate so much fun and unforgettable moments; we would not like to experience over-hyped weeks and dinners that turn out dry and boring.

In addition, we look forward to a safe and secure school environment. We sincerely hope that there are no security breaches that may cause fear and panic among students this semester, and that security measures are intensified.

Finally, not to be a killjoy or anything of the sort, but Book Of Life is also going to be released pretty soon. I’m sure everyone is expecting its release; whether in melancholy or in ecstasy. Whether we admit it or not, one way or the other we’re all looking forward to it, but I really hope we won’t be discouraged. This is a new semester, and it comes with a lot of new opportunities. Let us seize these opportunities as they come, and use them wisely. I wish us an exciting, trouble-free semester.
