WHAT NEXT AFTER THE ELECTIONS?

We performed a call of duty last week; we voted for the candidates of our choices. Now that a new student’s union administration is about to unfold with the first set of executives to resurrect the union since it went underground, let us go beyond our last call of duty. Let us be prepared to call the new executives to accountability because we are at the receiving end of their decision making.
I want to use this medium to congratulate the winners in the last election on their call to duty. The winners include Olofinlade Ebenezer and Akeju Oluwasegun (Presidency), Oladiti Aishat (Vice President), Fijabi Israel (General Secretary), Omotosho Adeshina and Oluwakayode Mustapha (Assistant General Secretaries), Abdul-Fattah Abdul-Muhaymin and Oladeji Richard (House Secretaries), Edet Collins (Treasurer), Oladeji Abiodun (PRO), and others unmentioned.
However, I only congratulate them for their call to the duty of serving the students of the university. They have not only won in the last election, they have been called to the duty of service and leadership. Their ultimate victory thus lies in fulfilling the promises and pledges they’ve made in their manifestoes once they are officially inaugurated. It is only therefore by duty now that they fulfil the call of service. Therefore, our new executives cannot afford to fail in carrying out their responsibilities. They have a lot of work to do, as the pioneers of a new student’s union government. They have to meet the needs of students without defying the school authorities. If they defy the school authorities like Ojo Aderemi did, they jeopardize the fate of students. Also, they should not be found wanting if they decide to obey the school authorities at the expense of their commitment to students’ affairs.
Now to us who have called the new executives to the duty of leadership by voting them in, calling them to probity and accountability is never an option, it is a must. We must call them to account for every of their decisions that affect us in any way. We must henceforth keep them concentrated on the duty we have called them to by staying informed about their decision making in the capacity of student leadership. We must do everything we can in our capacity to make the newly elected members of the student’s union administration accountable to us. Thereby by doing this, the university’s student unionism moves forward.
Voting in the last election is a primary duty we have performed in good faith. Now that the ball is in the court of our new student’s union representatives, let us proceed to call them to accountability in their exercise of their duties.
