Hello!! Can I get your attention for some minutes? I would like to fill your ears with what my eyes have seen at the University of Ibadan Christmas Concert whose theme was The Nativity of Christ by Caleb Simper.

I wouldn’t have been saying this but my pen has decided to be a holy ‘gbéborùn’ (gossip).

Right from the beginning, the UI Christmas Carol was performed by the University choir which consist of students from different departments, but things changed when the Music department was founded and the baton of performance was given to the rightful heirs.

As usual, this year Christmas Carol which took place at the Trenchard Hall on the 17th of December, 2019 paid the people of UI another amazing and interesting visit. Did I just say usual over there? Oh pardon my head! The invitation of this year is unusual and exceptional.

The concert was graced by the crème de la crème of the society. We have the likes of professors, doctors, celebrities, Student Union president, Mr Akeju, etc. The chairman of the occasion still remains the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. A.I. Olayinka, FAS. Just accept and chew the fact and truth.

You would have experienced it but you didn’t because you were not there. Should I say you missed a lot? Let me save that for another day.

Oh my God, the MC of the event is a first class one. He didn’t fall my hands as I heard him introduced the fantastic performers from the Department of Music at the University of Ibadan as the best in the world.

Is that where the great fun ended? Never! The amazing part extended to the Choir conductor, Dr. T.O Owoaje, whose conducting style and burning passion have no comparison within and beyond Africa. Yes, I mean it. Even those who have travelled around the world confirmed it.

The performance was also spiced graciously by the assistant choir director, Mr Samuel Ajose.

The audience was wowed beyond amazement at every performance as they never stopped to hit their palms together and also to give countless standing ovation. I think the Music students gave them something beyond their imaginations.

The atmosphere of the hall was transformed colourfully with the beautiful voices like that of the singing Angels. If you were there you would have wished to be a music student. I tell you!

The audience wasn’t given only classical music to drink but also given local dishes to fill their tummies with the help of Mr Adeolu Ogunsanya and his Orchestral/band: Yuletide Highlife Apala, etc.

The Technical unit under the brilliant leadership of Mr Tunji Dada made sure there was minimum technical problem. And the logistic unit was very active as they were led by Mama Music, Mrs Bolaji Akanni.

Can you tell me what speaks the language of the hearts more than Music? I guess there is none.

This year Christmas Carol really imprinted the huge importance of Christ’s birth and made the day of those who attended.

2019 colourful wrapper has been beautifully wrapped and packed with an impressive Christmas Concert. We wish you a merry Christmas and a prosperous new year in advance.
