Chelsea were on a good run of form when Tuchel was appointed coach after Frank Lampard’s sacking. Their good run of form led them to the FA cup final and Champions league final. They beat European power houses Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Porto to reach the Champions league final while they beat the current best team in England to reach FA cup final.
They had high hopes of winning the FA Cup however they were undone by Tielemans superb winning strike for Leicester. Leicester city kept their cool to win the title. Chelsea were left disappointed as they lost their chance of clinching the FA Cup.
Chelsea fans were hoping for a repeat of 2012, a season where they won both the FA cup and the Champions league with Robert di Matteo. Like Tuchel, he was appointed mid-season. Now that FA cup is gone, there can no longer be a repeat of the 2012 season.
Now the question remains can they redeem their season by winning the Champions league and making top 4? It is highly possible they do. They are going against a strong opponent in Manchester City but they have the temerity and ability to beat Manchester City. Judging from the way they played against Real Madrid, it was clear they have the intensity and hunger needed to win the Champions league. It is this same hunger and intensity that has pushed them from 7th place before Tuchel’s arrival to 4th place in the Premier league. They also have the capacity of remaining in the top 4 at the end of the season.
They have already beaten Manchester City twice this season and they can do it for a third time. Tuchel would have been left disappointed by the loss against Leicester City. It was his fourth loss in a cup final. He even lost his first Champions league final to Bayern Munich. His team at that time, PSG lost narrowly to Bayern Munich courtesy of a Kingsley Coeman’s strike. Thomas Tuchel will be looking to banish last year’s Champion league final loss. Statistics is also behind him; Most Managers who enters Champions league final the season after they lost the final wins the competition. Statistics are also behind Chelsea; Teams who get to the Champions League final for the first time have never won the Competition. Manchester City compete for the first time. Chelsea will be hoping that Manchester City will add to the statistics.
Winning the Champions league will redeem their season and ensure them automatic Champions league qualification. Champions league qualification is not ensured for them yet. They are currently four points above Liverpool who have a game in hand. Any slip up from Chelsea might see them lose the top four. If Chelsea lose top four, winning the Champions league will be redemption for them. They enjoy the benefits of being European Champions and also automatically qualify for next season’s Champions league.
It is very possible for them to win the Champions league. It is also very possible for them to make top 4. Doing both will not only redeem their season, it will also crown Thomas Tuchel’s effort.
