Honourable Saheed Akinade-Fijabi has urged Nigerian youths to get involved in the politics of Nigeria. He said this on September 3, at the 11th edition of the Lanre Bello Inter-faculty Debate, which is an annual oratory event organised by the Junior Chambers International.
In his speech as the chairman of the occasion, he spoke on the theme of the debate: Youths in Politics, and the two topics that were debated on which are: The Youth Reclaiming Their Future: A Reality or Folklore? and The Voices of The Nigerian Youths: Is it of Substance or Echo?
Fijabi, in his speech, stated that the rate youth participation in Nigerian politics is very low and the youths can only reclaim their future if their apathy towards politics is replaced with genuine interest.
“The crop of youths at the National Assembly can do nothing, because they are very few,” he stated. He also said that for the voices of the youths to be of substance and be heard, they have to be focused and logical. He made reference to the END SARS protest of October 2020 which he claimed began well but ended badly. “END SARS was hijacked because because the youths had no focus,” he said.
He also lamented that even with the large turn out of youths during the protest, only few of them have been participating in the subsequent elections tha have held in some constituencies and local governments in Nigeria.
