FIVE WAYS TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR UNIVERSITY EXPERIENCE
By Elizabeth Inda-John
The University is a place for advanced learning but at the same time, it’s the place for fun. The type that your parents might not often encourage. The University affords young people a type of freedom that is not quite found anywhere else.
Unfortunately people leave school and still say that they didn’t enjoy school. People go 4/5years without any hint of fun! Imagine that!
Although the word fun is subjective. You could do nothing and it would be fun to you. I can relate heavily to that but everyone deserves the mind-blowing stories that University gives you. Here are some tips to make your University days even much more fun.
- Build Meaningful Friendships: Go out for meetings, conferences, seminars. Leave the comfort of your room and meet people. There are so many people on campus with many different personalities. Building relationships is so much fun. The process of getting to know another person is magical! You’d enjoy it. Hit up discussion with schoolmates, welcome individuals to hang out, but make sure to find the real ones.
- Join Societies/Clubs: There are so many options for this. There is The Literary and Debating society, the Okigbo Poetry Club, The University/Faculty/Department Press and so on. Apart from the fact that it will help improve your life, you’d enjoy yourself and even get to brag about it after school.
- Become a Campus Politician: This trumps other options because of the massive drama and the responsibilities that come are massive. It also helps to develop strong leadership skills in you. You can brag about this too!
- Try New Things: Go out and do something out of character. Try new foods. Take a dance class. Go for a theatre presentation or a musical one. Go for shows, go for trade fair. Volunteer ruthlessly to organization that align to your dream. All these things ensure that you have a memorable experience in later years to come.
- Have a side hustle: Alas! Most of the reason that makes us sit back from having fun is the lack of money. It’s never too early to live the life that you deserve. Seek out paid opportunities. Reach out to companies and give them your qualifications, become a freelancer, start your business. Getting used to this would help you a long way outside school because you’re enhancing your worth to companies.
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. You develop the wisdom and sense to make good decisions and choices through experience. It might seem like too much to do all at once but your future would thank you. The goal is to not have any regrets. Make the years count. Cheers!
