SATIRE: LESSONS TO LEARN FROM AFAS

It is no doubt that the University of Ibadan is one of the top learning institutions in Nigeria. This is evident in the intellectuals produced annually in the premier university. UI is obviously ‘a fountain head of true learning, deep and sound’. It should however be noted that the learning does not take place alone in the lecture rooms, clinical labs or graphic studios as the case may be, almost everything in the university has a lesson to teach.
For instance, the Students Union Building Sport complex portrays facilities that have seen better days, teaching anyone that cares to learn that nothing lasts forever hence the need to be humble. The clock on the tower in the senate building teaches that even a stopped clock is correct twice a day, everything is quite useful. The difference in price of 5Alive Pulpy Orange sold in cafeterias, Pepsi stand and other shops has taught me personally that all fingers are not equal and I have to cut my coat according to my cloth.
However, the most important lessons I have learnt so far are from the current executives of the Association of Faculty of Arts Students (AFAS). Lessons I plan to apply to my daily life and I believe will be handy in the nearest future. First, I have learnt that law makers are free to be law breakers. The Faculty Legislative Council is my perfect role model. When you see notifications for their sittings with the “DRESSING PROTOCOL WILL BE UPHELD” you had better come in an incomplete native attire. If you are a lady, wear a non-professional gown, the one befits an evening party, and wear a slippers. It doesn’t matter how you look. On the floor of the House, there are no discriminations. Come as you are is the mantra.
Again, when they say their sitting stats by 3.p.m, please prepare for 4:30 p.m. It usually takes a long time for the mace to be brought to the House. As the prized possession it is, it has to be handled with care. Thus, it takes a long time before it is brought to the House. If you are unlucky, you might get there and still see some of the Honourable members in twos and threes outside the venue for the sitting. Then, it is advisable for you to go back and return by 5.pm. After all, you don’t have anything better to do. You may also choose to hang around, if you are interested in watching how the other Honourable members arrive in grand style.
Indeed, AFAS is an intellectual gathering. If you look long enough, you will learn. There will be more lessons. Just watch.
