We will review the AFAS constitution to reflect the current reality – Rt Hon Olasoji

Sequel to calls from different quarters of the faculty for a review of the outdated Afas constitution, facts available at the disposal of Afas Press have indicated that the process for the review of the constitution has commenced. Rt. Hon. Olasoji Akindejoye, speaker of the faculty legislative council, said the progress had commenced before the ASUU strike following a memo from the Dean of Student affairs to the faculty’s stakeholders which includes the executive council, the legislative, the CPS and the press.

Rt. Hon Olasoji, while making a case for the review said it is necessary because some parts of the constitution do not reflect current economic and political reality. He cited an example of Article 31, section iii of the constitution which states that “The Treasurer shall be empowered to keep an imprest account of not more than Ten Thousand Naira (N10, 000).” According to him; “we all know that amount is not feasible to do much in the economic reality of nowadays, so it will be reviewed to meet the current market value of the naira,”
The speaker also asserted that he raised the motion for the review of the constitution as a member of the house during the tenure of Rt. Hon Olumide Osinuga during the 2018/2019 session.

The members of the constitution review committee from the FLC include; Rt Hon. Olasoji Akindejoye, the house speaker representing Linguistics and African Languages Constituency who is the chairman of the committee, Hon. Yusuff Shukurat, representing Communication and Language Arts constituency and Hon. Chiedo Collins, representing Archaeology and Anthropology constituency.

Nominated members of the committee by the Council of Presidents and Secretaries (CPS) are; Abdulazeez Samiat Temiladun from CLA, Yunus Idris from Classics, Adesope Oluwatosin from Linguistics, Adebiyi Emmanuel from History, Oke Abayomi from Philosophy, Tochi John from Anthropology and Archeology. Others are: Waheed Sodiq from Theatre Arts, Aqua Esther from European studies, Adeyemo Adebisi from Religious Studies, Bolaji Suliat from Arabic and Islamic studies.

Members of the committee from the Executive council includes: Hon. Akinyoola Emmanuel, who is the faculty’s President, Hon Olorunfemi Jumoke, the Vice President, and Hon. AbdulRasaq Hassan, the General Secretary.

Members of the committee from AFAS Press are: Oluwatosin Adeoye, Adeniyi Pelumi and Olanshile Ogunrinu.
