UI Amazons defeat OAU Giantess by 2 goals to 1

In a friendly match held at AWO stadium on Friday, the female football team of the University of Ibadan, the UI Amazons, defeated the Obafemi Awolowo University female football team, the OAU Giantess, with a 2-1 scoreline.

Following kick off at exactly 12:35pm, OAU striker, Choice, opened the scoreline few minutes after the kickoff from a free kick she earned and shot directly into the back of the net. After the goals, The UI team mounted a furious pressure in the 18 yard box of the OAU team in search of an equalizer. In the 15th minute of the match, UI striker, Opemipo, leveled the scoreline from a shot after a lot of obstructions in the 18-yard box of the Giantess.

The UI team then could have taken the lead, but the OAU goalkeeper made a brilliant save.

Choice was unable to convert another free kick into a goal while mounting an effusive pressure in the 18-yard box of the Amazons.
In search of a goal to take the lead, Toyin dribbles past three opponents, sends a pass to Opemipo, but she could not get the possession of the ball as she waited for the ball to reach her.

OAU’s No. 3, Darasimi, sustained a slight injury when she fell down abruptly from blocking a fiery shot with her chest. The first half ended at 1:08 pm on an equal level.
Upon restart, both teams started with renewed vigor, with mixed feelings in the minds of the supporters of both teams on who will emerge victorious.

Both teams made desperate moves to clinch the victory, charging one another tirelessly. OAU thought they had taken the lead but the goal was flagged as offside.

The second goal finally arrived for UI Amazons via a penalty from Mercy after one of OAU’s defenders was adjudged to have handled the ball in the penalty area.

In approaching the closing stages of the match, Bukky could have restored parity for OAU, but the No. 19, failed to convert a golden opportunity when one-on-one with the UI goalkeeper.

UI Amazons were then able to hold out to a win and claim bragging rights in the South-west derby match.
