AFAS Culture Catch-up

As the students hustle between classes, there’s an unspoken heartbeat that defines our Faculty. It’s the dedicated students, each one different from the other, but come together to breathe life into our academic home; to form the culture that rubs through every department in the Faculty.

These students are the unsung heroes behind the budding departmental culture that rubs through the Faculty like scarlet thread. In every lecture hall, every corridor meeting, and every interaction, they exemplify the core values that define our Faculty.

One such set of students are the Linguistics Yoruba speakers. I call them the Yoruba-yackers of Linguistics! These language enthusiasts can’t help but add a dash of Yoruba flavor to every sentence they dissect. It’s like trying to teach penguins to fly—Yoruba just takes flight, no matter what language they’re exploring!

True, certain aspects of their course contain and require the Yoruba language, but it is overdone. Their lecturers teach with Yoruba! Of course, not all of the students in the department yarn on and on in Yoruba, but we know what they say about the majority.
When asked, they say they’re “keeping the culture from being lost”. And hey, who are we to judge them?
