6 Types of Students During Freshers’ Welcome

Freshers’ welcome in AFAS is a vibrant rite of passage into each department. It’s supposed to serve as a thrilling welcome to the world of higher education. Different personalities that make up the university ecosystem greet these freshers as they step into campus, and a freshers’ welcome is supposed to help them navigate their way through the institution and provide a fun gathering for the perils of the first year.

Now, during some of these programs done in various departments in the faculty, here are the different classifications of students that attended.

1. The Ancient Ones: These are the seasoned staylites who know, really know, what these freshers are in for. They didn’t come to celebrate them. They came to pity them and laugh at them and at the hilarious bits of advice given by the lecturers. They also come to unwind secretly. Their levels are already showing them shege.

2. The Foodies: As their name implies, they came for only one thing: the food or snacks at the end of the program. Most of them are, most times, not even students of the faculty, but who will know? One way to identify them is that they arrive close to the end of the program.

3. The Workers: You may call them the department or faculty executives, but all they do is work. For those who are newly elected, they want to make sure that they are properly hyped on the departmental page, so they keep going and coming. Please, sit down for one side. We see you enough already.

4. The Life-of-The-Party: Despite being freshers, THEY BRING LIFE TO THE PARTY. Simple. Especially in departments (like English) where the lecturers interfere with the flow, these freshers maintain the fun and keep things going for their fellow freshers. Give it up, please!

5. The Old Freshers: They watch with a knowing grin and slight irritation as their fellow freshers frenzily lap up every word the lecturers or seniors say. These ones either have seniors who have properly schooled them in what courses to take, and what departments to go to, or they have done an OND course somewhere before. They are confident in their wisdom and experience. They’ve been there, done that, and they’re not afraid to show it.

6. The True Freshers: They are the ones the program is meant for, but they are only a handful. These freshers hang on every word of the professors and lecturers, eager to please, and they leave with the most detailed note of every activity that took place during the program. When the lecturers tell them not to take courses from Music department, they scribble it down hurriedly. What a pity!
