Less than 200 Students Waiting as UI Congress Fails to Commence an Hour after Stipulated Time

Less than 200 students of the University of Ibadan were present at the Congress ground at the SUB foyer one hour after the scheduled time. The Congress which had been earlier scheduled to commence at 7am had witnessed a low turnout of students.

In accordance with the Students’ Union constitution, the Congress could only start after the quorum has been reached in which 500 students must be in attendance.

While reacting to the low turnout of the students, UI SU assistant General Secretary, Olamilekan Adeniyi (Mojuba), faulted the low attendance on people being fond of getting to the venue of an event after the scheduled time. While he stated that other executive members are already in the halls of residence to mobilize students.

“We should understand the fact that we’re in Africa and Africans time is one of the habit of people in the Africa. But on our side other executives are in various halls to mobilize people which we believe that it will be effective”.

He stated that the Congress is crucial at the moment when the student populace is being faced with a lot of challenges in which it could serve as an avenue for them to converge and make their demands known.

“The student leaders do not have any power. The only power that the leaders have resides with the students. So, any UI student that wants his/her voice to be heard and wants the leadership to address any of their challenges should ensure that they find their way to the Congress because its going to change the story of our challenges”.
