ASSE Emerges the Maiden Champions of the Sigma League Cup, Female Category

ASSE and Statistics battled for the crown and the chance to become the maiden winner of the Sigma League Cup female category on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at the Zik Hall Maracana. After about 40 minutes of intense play, ASSE took first place and emerged as the maiden winner of the Sigma League Cup.

ASSE took the lead after scoring a second Penalty allotted to them due to the Statistics team jubilating while a game was still on, which flaunts a football rule. Before the second penalty, Statistics played a handball foul which led to the first penalty for ASSE, fortunately for Statistics, their goalkeeper made a brilliant save. Out of excitement, Statistics jubilated during play and a second penalty was allotted, this time taken by Omolola. This second penalty led to the first goal of the match against Statistics in the first half. Every attempt made by Statistics to equalise proved abortive until the end of the first half.

Early into the second half, ASSE once again took the lead by scoring another goal. This time, with a straight goal kick played by an ASSE defender over the Statistics goalie’s head.

Some minutes into the second half, in a desperate attempt to prevent the ball from entering the net, Omolola from ASSE held the ball at box 18, this attempt translates to a penalty. Statistics defender scored the penalty, making it 2-1 goals scored for and against two goals— 2 goals to ASSE and a goal to Statistics.

The players from Statistics fought hard to secure an equaliser, but their attempts yielded no results. The match ended with ASSE emerging as the maiden Champions of the Sigma League Cup, female category, after they prevented the equaliser and pressure from Statistics till the final whistle. The total number of penalties played was three, and both teams scored one each.
