AFASites Raise Concern Over the Election Process

Members of the Association of Faculty of Arts Students (AFAS) have raised their concerns over the process of the ongoing election.

The election which started at 9:10am, today, Friday, April 5, saw AFASites coming out in numbers to exercise their voting rights.
However, some students were not allowed to vote because they could only provide one of the requirements which guarantees their eligibility to vote.

According to Olawadare Damola, a 100 level student of the department of Linguistics and African Languages, AFAS Independent Electoral Committee (AFASIEC) stipulated that electorates should come with either AFAS dues receipt or AFAS ID card in the circulated broadcast message.

While expressing his concerns, Peculiar Gbolahan, a 200 level student of the department of Religious Studies faulted the electoral body on the dissemination of information.

“AFASIEC released a BC that we should come with our Identity Cards or AFAS dues receipt, but on getting here this morning, they actually changed the whole process and requirements. There are some students who have paid but have not being issued their receipts.”

While responding to the issues raised by AFASites, the Chairperson of the Electoral Committee, Oluwayori Ayokunnumi, stated that AFAS dues receipt and a means of identification are prerequisites to voting in the election as circulated in the broadcast message.

She said the electoral committee have spotted a lot of irregularities in the accreditation list in which some names appeared more than twice.

“I cannot verify the eligibility of anyone without the financial secretary affirming that they have paid, and also means of identification which bears the name, matriculation number and faculty of the electorates”.

She also mentioned that the financial secretary has provided the list of AFASites who have paid but are yet to collect their receipts, to ensure that they are able to exercise their voting right.
