UI VC Advises UISU SRC to Choose Consultation Over Confrontation

Professor Kayode Adebowale, the Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan has advised the Student Representative Council of the institution to engage consultation with the management rather than opting for confrontation over every issue.
Professor Adebowale represented by Professor Peter Olapegba, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration, gave this admonition to the student leaders in a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor, reiterating that “everything should not be about confrontation, protests, and conflicts but more of consultation and bringing matters to the table for peaceful resolution.”
The VC also urged officers and members of the Students’ Representative Council to be wary of unguarded power usage to avoid corrupt practices in the union under their care, stressing that they must be found worthy in character and sound judgment.
Professor Adebowale while congratulating the leaders of the Council on their emergence as Officers of the Student’s Representative Council of the University of Ibadan admonished the students “to be total students by balancing unionism and academic excellence”. Emphasising that “acquiring knowledge and obtaining certificates are their purposes of coming to UI.” adding a word of caution that they must avoid what will deprive them of graduating alongside their mates.
He also admonished that the “Students’ Representative Council is expected to check the activities of the students’ union executives constitutionally and not fight or witch hunt them.” whilst assuring the SRC that the University management operates an open door administration.
Speaking at the event, Rt Honourable Opegbemi Busoye, The Speaker of the Student’s Representative Council, mentioned that the purpose of the visit was to officially “introduce Officers of the SRC to the management, to seek guidance, counsel, support, contribution and collaboration.”
Hon. Busoye explained that the SRC plans to hold legislative workshops, legislative week, SRC summit, award presentation, sanitation services to the university community, and essay competition for the students.
