Students of the university of Ibadan have petitioned the Students’ Union Executives of the University of Ibadan and  the Students’ Representative Council against the disrespect and falsification of the Congress resolutions, held on Saturday, 17th August, 2024.

The letter titled “ Petition Against The Disrespect And Falsification Of Congress Resolutions By The UI’SU Executive Council”, was written and signed by six students: Aduwo Ayodele, Nice Linus, Bolaji Eiyeke, Adewumi Damilare, and Michael Awoyemi; and addressed to the UI’SU executives and the SRC Speaker.

The underlying reason for the petition was the disrespect -walking out of the students-  exhibited by the SU president and the incomplete publications of all resolutions made at the Congress by the Students Union executives at the time of release.

The resolutions made at the Congress according to the petition includes:

“The University Management should issue a memo within three working days to halt departments and faculties from requesting school fee receipts; the school fee payment portal should be suspended; the Students’ Union Executive Council should release a memo detailing these demands or face calls for their resignation.”

“Sad to discover, the resolution released by the Students’ Union did not capture the Congress resolutions, which the President acknowledged and publicly read out before abruptly leaving the congress. We find the misconduct of leaving the Congress abruptly a gross disrespect of the congress, being the apex organ of the Students’ Union, and the falsification of the resolutions, a breach of the constitution which recognizes the congress as the final decision making organ.”

In lieu of this, the students gave the union executives 5 hours to correct the error and show respect for the consensus decision of the congress.”

“Against this backdrop, we unequivocally demand a correction of the error within 5-hour of the receipt of this petition. We make this conscious demand with the expectation that the leadership of the Students’ Union will respect the consensus decision of the Congress,” the petition reads.

Among the copied recipients of the petition includes: the UCJUI, The Academic Staff Union of the University(ASUU) , Council of Faculty Presidents, UI, Council of Hall Chairs,UI; among others.
