FLC Passes bill for Inclusion of 100-level Students to Committee Stage

The Association of Faculty of Arts Students’ Faculty Legislative Council (AFAS FLC) has passed the bill sponsored by Hon. Olufemi of the Linguistic Constituency at her 4th Plenary Sitting held on Friday, 23rd August, 2024.

Honourable members of the Faculty Legislative Council deliberated upon the Co-Option Bill. The first prayer on the Bill requested the inclusion of the 100-level students into the membership of the FLC.

The first prayer of the bill met with opposing views from members of the Hallow Chamber. All opposing views however received responses from Hon. Olufemi in defense of the bill. Objecting to the bill Hon. Peter Oke stated that “the names of the 100level Students are still written in pencil as they would not have GP/CGPA, and they need to focus on their academics”, in a swift response Hon. Olufemi stated that the students are perceived to be morons which counter the fact that every Uites has fought their way through SSCE, UTME, POST UTME which indicates that they are intelligent and can suggest viable ideas to as association being members of the FLC. “

Hon. Olufemi said, “To the best of my knowledge, the 100-level students statistically pay more dues, though I’m not here with the statistics”. He affirmed that they should be duly represented in the house and recognised as a constituency, adding that there are 200-level, 300-level, and 400-level constituencies, hence, nothing should resist the creation of a 100-level Constituency.

The second prayer requested that the Roman numeral 5 of Article 18 be scrapped from the constitution and that the executive council shall be prevented from co-opting members into the house and has been modified to be the executive council will have a co-opted member in the how but the co-opted member will not have a voting right. This was the final stance of the house and a call for adoption of the Bill to be passed to the Committee Stage was made. Honourable Akanji moved the motion for the adoption of the Bill seconded by Hon. Gbolahan.

The Deputy Speaker heads the Committee, other members include Hon. Thomas (Classics), Hon. Pauline (European Studies), Hon. Raji Noah (Lin), and Hon. Azeezat (Arabic), the Speaker announced after the adoption.
