Contrary to Constitutional Requirements, UISUEC Mandates Aspirants to Resign Non-Union Positions

The University of Ibadan Students’ Union Electoral Commission has mandated aspirants to resign from non-union positions, sparking concerns about constitutional compliance.

According to Article 2 Section 26 of the Students’ Union Constitution, which states: “Any Union officer wishing to contest at any Union election shall have resigned any previous political appointments, and such resignations shall have been made public before the close of nominations.”

This provision or any other part of the constitution does not talk about aspirants holding political appointments outside of the Union.

However, when AFAS Press contacted the UISUEC Logistics Committee Chairman, Olaniyi Sodeeq, he affirmed that aspirants holding positions in their halls of residence, faculties or departments are meant to resigned their appointments.

This directive raises concerns about the UISUEC’s interpretation of the constitution and its potential impact on the student union leadership elections.
