AFAS FLC Passes Amendment Bill to Second Reading

The Association of Faculty of Arts Legislative Council AFAS FLC, during its second physical plenary sitting on Friday, May 30, has passed a bill to amend FLC membership to the second reading stage.

The Bill sponsored by Hon. Lawal Abdul-Qayyum Kayode of the English Constituency and titled An Amendment to the Flc Membership Bill (2024) seeks to amend the FLC Membership Amendment Bill sponsored by Hon. Olufemi Inioluwa (2024) which is still “currently awaiting presidential assent.”

Hon. Lawal’s bill proposes that the prayers and clauses of Hon. Olufemi’s Bill “remains intact,” while certain prayers and clauses are included.

The additional prayer (Two) seeks amendment to figure (ii) & (iii), Article (18), and figure (ii), Article (23) of the Association of Faculty of Arts Students Constitution that state that. These sections state that: the FLC shall be made up of three elected representatives from each Department Students’ Association; the three members representing each constituency must be from different levels; and no member of the FLC shall be on 100 level while serving in the house.

The new bill seeks the addition of 100-level members to make up four representatives from each constituency with two clauses that: “No Honourable from 100 level shall be allowed to contest for a post in the House and not be allowed to head any committee of the House.”

Recall that in November, 2024, Hon. Inioluwa Olufemi sponsored an AFAS FLC membership bill which was partly opposed by some members of the House. The first provision of the bill was the inclusion of 100-level AFASites into the House to allow for inclusivity and maximum representation which was overruled, while the second provision of no executive co-opted member saw an adjustment to only one executive co-opted member with no voting rights.

To pass Hon. Lawal’s bill to the second reading stage, Hon. Abdullahi from AIS Constituency moved a motion to approve and pass the bill, which was seconded by Hon. David from History Constituency
