FOREST DEPLETION IN NIGERIA POSES ENVIRONMENTAL DISORDERS- Prof A.S. Gbadegesin

Professor A.S.Gbadegesin of the Department of Geography, Faculty of The Social Sciences recently said this at the 460th Inaugural lecture of the University of Ibadan titled; The Eleventh Commandment: Stewardship for Sustainable Environment in Nigeria” held on the 18th of July, 2019.

The lecture was recently held at the Faculty of Science Lecture Theatre, University of Ibadan.

He made this statement while commenting on the high rates of forest depletion in Nigeria. While posing the question, “Why is the soil bedeviled by myriads of problems in Nigeria?” He added that the high rates of forest depletion in Nigeria leads to actual loss of productive top soil, which in turn hinders agriculture, one of the footholds of the economy.

While dwelling on the consequences of the disasters posed by forest depletion, he delineated on the need for proper soil management as it ensures quality crop products, sustainable environment and good health.

As a corollary, he recommended three strategies needed to be adopted to ensure proper soil management—firstly the adoption of agro-forestry and plantation agriculture. Secondly, the implementation of laws to promote environmental sustainability and punish offenders.

Finally, the exigent need for proper enlightenment of the people on proper soil management in order to promote a sustainable environment in Nigeria.
