EMERGENCE OF A NEW KILLER DISEASE IS A THREAT TO ALL – Prof. Olanike K. Adeyemo

The Deputy Vice-chancellor, research, innovation and strategic partnership, Professor Olanike Kudirat Adeyemo, said this while delivering the 46th Inaugural lecture of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, also the 461th of the University of Ibadan titled; ” Environmental, Animal and Human Health: The 3 Braided Cord for a Public Health Veterinarian” recently held at The Faculty of Science Lecture Theatre.

She made this statement while lamenting on the increasing rate of environmental pollution which takes it tolls on both animal and human health as this unfortunately, leads to the breakout of new killer diseases such as Ebola fever, kidney dysfunction, cancer, infertility and so on.

She also admonished public health veterinarians to put the ‘3 Braided Cord’ ( that is; Environmental health, Animal health and Human health) as a priority by enhancing water quality and aquatic life system, fighting zoonotic diseases as these would help to prevent the emergence of new killer diseases.

In conclusion, she advocated a health strategic plan at all levels of government and also the increased funding of the public health sector as this will enhance increased research and integrated diseases diagnosis and management.
