FACULTY OF ARTS COUNCIL OF PRESIDENTS AND SECRETARIES ELECTS NEW LEADERS

Faculty of Arts Council of Presidents and Secretaries, comprising of all Presidents, Vice-presidents, and General Secretaries of students association in the faculty, on Thursday 25th July, 2019 conducted an election to elect its new leaders.

In the election, Michael Awoyemi, President of National Association of Students of English and Literary Studies (NASELS) emerged as the chairman of the council, defeating his opponent who is the president of Archaeology and Anthropology Students Association (AASA), Caleb Ikechukwu, by 7 to 6 votes.

Also, John Taiwo Basiru, president of National Association of Students of Religious Studies (NASSORS), was elected as the vice-chairman, defeating the President of Association of Theatre Arts Students (ATAS), Ms. Omowunmi Dabira Osuolale, by 8 votes to 2.

Meanwhile, Mr. Progress Amajuonyi (NAPS), General Secretary of National Association of Philosophy Students, was elected the council’s secretary by a unanimous vote from majority of the members as he contested unopposed, and having 13 votes for and nil against.

In his inaugural address to the council, chairman-elect, Michael Awoyemi, urged members to take the issue of representation at the faculty level serious. According to him, honourable members representing each level in various departments should always give a report of every sitting they attended so that the association in each department would be abreast of what decisions are being taken at the Faculty Legislative Council (FLC) and the honourable members should present the stance of their departments on certain issues.

He also suggested to the council that they should ensure press members in their association attend FLC sitting so they could keep a tab on the performance of the honourable members representing the department while also suggesting that honourable members that were not duly elected to the FLC should be recalled and fresh election conducted to assure greater accountability.

The election was coordinated by the General Secretary of Students Historical Society of Nigeria, Joanna Olatunji, and the President, Oreoluwa Ayorinde who also broke the tie when the election between Michael Awoyemi and Caleb Ikechukwu was tied at 6 votes each, acting on the suggestion of Tobiloba Adeyilola, the newly elected president of Association of European Studies.
