MAN CANNOT DO WITHOUT MATERIALS FOR DEVELOPMENT TO TAKE PLACE IN THE SOCIETY – Prof Oluleke

Prof Oluleke O. O, Professor of Materials Engineering, said that man cannot do without materials for meaningful development to take place in the society.
He said this recently at the inaugural lecture of the Faculty of Technology, titled; Materials: Vehicle for Engineering Concepts Actualizationat the faculty of science lake side lecture theatre, University of Ibadan.
“I would define materials as everything we can find or extract from nature, their atomic and elemental compositions and all products made from them. Thus, the materials in the world includes atoms, elements, compounds and mixtures and every physical object in nature that are available for man’s use, whether in the native form or as raw material for a product.” Prof. Oluleke stated.
He also explained that materials are classified into primary and secondary materials. Primary materials are materials obtained from nature (clays, gold, ores, crude oil, rubber and coal) and secondary materials are processed materials (paper, alloys, ceramics, textiles and glasses).
In order for materials to be the vehicle for the actualization of engineering concepts, he advised that dumping of goods into the country should be stopped. He also emphasized that efforts must be made to complete existing iron extraction plants, adding that flat sheet mills and structural rolling mills should also be built at the same location with extraction plants and good railing haulage system for the delivery of products to different market centers.
