The AFAS Dean’s Cup: What is it? When are the games and how do I watch them?

As the AFAS Dean’s Cup commences, AFAS Press provides an overview of the tournament, and the fixtures and game information, for would-be spectators.

What is the Dean’s Cup?
The Dean’s Cup is a sporting, usually but often not exclusively footballing, competition designed to enable student participation in sports, an essential, even required, extracurricular university activity. It takes place in the second semester of every session. Each faculty in the university has its own version of organised games. In the Faculty of Arts the tournament is held in the name of the dean, and begins in a preliminary stage where teams are divided into groups and face each other in a round robin format. Then the survivors advance to the knockout stages. In the end there is a trophy and three sets of medals: golden for the winners, silver for the runners-up, and bronze for the third placed.

How is it organised?
Football is the only sport in this year’s AFAS Dean’s Cup, and it is divided into both male and female categories. The twelve departments of the faculty are all eligible to participate. Intending players join their departments’ sports teams in order to make the squads. All games are played at the SUB pitch, officially known as the Old Stadium, which is just beside the faculty.
