Philosophy Defeats Classics on Penalties to win AFAS Super 4 Competition

In a match touted as the clash of the two giants of Faculty of Arts football, Philosophy keeps exerting their dominance on Faculty if Arts football as they came out victorious yet again on penalties to be crowned champions of this year’s AFAS Super 4 competition following up on their last session’s Dean’s cup win. The match, which was ladened with controversies as the Classics team felt they were undone by the referee’s ineptitude, finished 1 all and Philosophy emerged victorious on penalties converting all of their penalties and Classics’ number 3 saw his kick go agonizingly wide the post.
Philosophy, who have won all but one of the last 7 Dean’s cup competition and has won the last 4 super 4 competition continued to show why they are the biggest football department in the faculty as their all-round game play was overwhelming for Classics to handle, especially in the first half.
Having dominated the midfield area for much of the opening period, Philosophy got the goal they deserved in the 14th minute from a well taken goal at the edge of the box right into the top right corner of the Classics goal keeper, having brilliantly saved a shot prior. Then in the 17th minute, philosophy saw their well-played freekick just over the bar. Then moments later, in the 17th minutes, Philosophy striker hit the underside of the cross bar having hit a power strike beyond the Classics’ goal keeper. The score line at half time flattered Classics, as philosophy dominated in all areas of the pitch, from the defense right up to the strikers up front. Evidence if this was the fact that Classics failed to register a single shot on goal in the first half and only had just one shot in the whole of the half.
Classics came back stronger in the second half seeing much of the ball but Philosophy game management stood out still as all shots on goal for Classics came from set plays. Classics number 7 saw his free kick come off the post 5 mins into the second half. In the 40th minute, Classics got their equalizer via a brilliantly played looping free kick by the Classics number 10 from yards out wide left. Prior to the goal, drama had ensued around SUB pitch as the referee sent off the Classics striker for dissent having won the free kick that led to the goal. Philosophy didn’t really create much in the second half as Classics kept troubling but they were well drilled in defense to keep the energetic Classics forwards from further breaching their rear guard. The match ended at one all and it went to penalty shootout.
In the shoot-out Classics goal keeper would feel luck was not with him as he guessed right for 3 out of the 4 penalties he faced and coming close to saving the last kick of the match as he pushed the ball into the roof of the net. In the end, philosophy emerge victorious and it was well deserved, and now it is off to the inter faculty competitions.
