UCJUI Inducts New Members

The Union of Campus Journalist, University of Ibadan, inducted new members for the 2020/2021 academic session and also held its Famous Five Awards on Saturday, September 18, 2021.
The ceremony, which took place at Trenchard Hall had in attendance prominent people like, senator Abdulfattah Buhari; Prof. Adenike Adeyemo; Dr. Jibril Abdulmalik, Founder, Asido Foundation; Fisayo Soyombo, Founder, Foundation for Investigative Journalism; Ibrahim Adeyemi, Investigative Journalist, Foundation for Investigative Journalism and Akeju Oluwasegun, President, Students’ Union, University of Ibadan.
The President of the union, Rauf Fasilat in her presidential speech, explained that 159 students obtained the membership form and wrote the examination but only 79 passed.
While delivering the induction speech, one of the keynote speakers, Mr. Ibrahim Adeyemi charged the inductees to be willing to make impacts through their story and always ensure that they have a public interest in mind adding that being courageous and accurate would also help them to practice well without fear of victimization.
“It’s better not to join Campus Journalism than joining without being effective. Journalism is not a big deal but it is one of the most difficult professions you could ever think of. Luckily, stories are all around, just develop noses for news and be objective in your reportage” he said.
Awards of excellence were also presented to five famous personalities that represent five different categories in society. According to the committee head, Bolaji Alade he noted that the awards were based on certain criteria after which the citations and the presentation of awards to these awardees follow.
Professor Olanike Adeyemo won the prize for the academic category; Senator Abdulfattah Buhari won the prize for the Political category; Dr. Jibril Abdulmalik won the prize for the Humanitarian category; Fisayo Soyombo won the prize for the Journalism category and Beautiful Nubia won the prize for the entertainment category.
The inductees took the Oath of Membership after which the union awarded prizes to the best inductees as well as most active inductees based on impactful contributions to campus journalism so far.
The Union’s magazine, Campulse was also launched by the dignitaries at the ceremony.
