A fracas ensued after a match that pitted the Kinetic Health Education (KHE) against History at the Awo Stadium ended in a one nil win in favour of KHE. The win took KHE into the next round, but after the final whistle, a fight broke out that involved the SU Sports Director.
The goal that won KHE the match came right in stoppage time when a ball was turned in by the goal-scorer after a ball was floated in over the top. History Team made a plea for offside but the referee’s initial decision stood.
According to an eyewitness, History players and fans around the stadium expressed their dissatisfaction after they were denied a penalty in the last minute of the match and had a goal ruled out for offside while pushing for an equaliser.
The UI SU Sports Director who was at the field was pushed down in the fracas that ensued from the protesting due to the refereeing controversies.
In an account by an eyewitness, A History player pushed OJB thinking he was a player from the KHE as he wore a jersey similar to theirs. He said “The guy saw OJB holding the neck of a History player and thought it was a KHE player so he pushed him to defend his teammates”.
