House Declares AFAS President Not Guilty; Awaits Students’ Affairs Resolution

The Association of Faculty of Arts (AFAS) Legislative Council, during the weekend plenary session maintained that the President of the association, Akinyoola Emmanuel is not guilty of the charges charged against him by the faculty management. 

While giving the outcome of the investigation, the chairman of the joint committee of the faculty legislative council, Hon. Alagunfun Lukman explained that the president has done nothing to contravene the laws of the associations during the preparation for the call-off party that was held recently. 

“Before passing judgment on this case, we implore the House to fall back to the conventions of the Association. There is, in fact, an unwritten rule which provides justification on the side of the president. This convention provides power for the executive council to hold favorable parties for AFAS without following the rigorous due process, so far no money will be withdrawn from the Association’s purse for the purpose,” he said.

The Chairman also claimed that the allegations are not within the scope of the association but instead have to do with the personal relationship of the president with the management, particularly the sub-dean of the faculty. 

“Following this convention, we can then say that the president has no issue with the association, but with the management, particularly the Sub-Dean. There seems to be an existing relationship between them, which the president leveraged, on good intent, for the purpose of the party. However, this backlashed,” his report reads in part. 

The committee also recommended that the president send an apology letter to the Sub-Dean and the Staff Advisers, to include a copy of the sponsor(s) letter of approval. 

Meanwhile, the matter is still under investigation at the Students’ Affairs division.
