UI Reinstates Ojo Aderemi

Former President of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union (UISU), Ojo Aderemi, who bagged four semesters of suspension from the University authorities in 2019 has been reinstated.

Recall that Ojo Aderemi, who was the President of the Union in 2017, alongside other union leaders led a protest tagged “No ID card, No Exam” on the non-issuance of identity cards for students. This led to the proscription of the Student Union and suspension of Ojo Aderemi by the University of Ibadan Students Disciplinary committee in 2019.

The suspension and proscription was on grounds that the protests disrupted academic activities and of ‘unruly behaviour’ of the president.

The suspension of Ojo Aderemi was met with various reactions from civic groups and student organizations and there were calls for his reinstatements from different quarters.

However, it can be reliably confirmed that the student of the History Department has been reinstated to continue his studies. Speaking to Ojo Aderemi, he acknowledged the reinstatement and said he has resumed the first semester of the 2021/2022 session.

“The suspension commenced on April 12, 2019, and was to last for 4 semesters lasting through 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 sessions. It ended in the second semester of 2020/2021. I resumed in this first semester of the 2021/2022 session,” Ojo said.

He also said he will be addressing the public on the issue soon.

Applauding the perseverance of the reinstated student during the travail, Asiwaju Babatimehin, a student activist said Ojo’s sacrifice for demanding for justice is significant and will be appreciated by generations to come.

“It is good to have Ojo back on campus and I commend his perseverance. We should not relent in pursuance of a sane society,” he concluded.
