Nigeria Health Watch Trains UI Campus Journalists

The Union of Campus Journalists (UCJ), University of Ibadan Chapter, in collaboration with Nigeria Health Watch, a health-based media house trains campus journalists on solutions journalism.

The training session which was facilitated by Mr. Chibuike Alagboso, a senior programme manager and Mr. Michael Atima, a programme delivery coordinator held at the department of Communications and Language Arts (CLA) postgraduate room.

Speaking during the training, Mr. Chibuike highlighted that solutions journalism is not a completely different type of journalism but rather a different approach to telling important stories.

“It is evidence-based reporting of how people are responding to social problems. We are getting inundated with news about what is going wrong on in the society. So, we need to report how people are making attempts to respond to these problems. What is working,” he said.

In his presentation, Michael Atima, spoke on the art of storytelling as a means to do quality reporting, further encouraging the union to invest in audio storytelling.

“Reports have shown that our attention span as human is reducing by the day. Hence, telling stories through audio is a means to make the content to reach a different set of audience,” he emphasized.
