FLC suspends chief whip, invites him for fair hearing, Hon. Arilewo forfeits membership

Association of Faculty of Arts’ Legislative Council (AFAS FLC) has on Saturday, 15th of April in a plenary session that was held in Room 40, suspended the chief whip of the house, Hon. Al-ameen Oladejo. Following the suspension, the deputy chief whip takes charge of his constitutional duties.
The reason for the suspension was stated that Hon. Al-ameen has missed three consecutive plenary sessions. The house revealed that he sent a letter to the house in the morning of the first missed sitting but was rejected by the Speaker, deputy speaker and the house.
The act of absenteeism is against the Article 21 (III) a, which states that “A member of the FLC shall be deemed to have forfeited his seat, should he be absent himself three consecutive sittings without a written permission from the speaker”. Hon. Lawal Daniel thereby moved a motion for the suspension of the chief whip while Hon. Joy seconded the motion. In the presence of a counter motion from Hon. Adelowo and Hon. Onyechi, the house conducted an open ballot voting where 8 members supported the suspension and 3 members opposed it.
In announcing the decision of the house, the Speaker of the house, Rt. Hon. Akindejoye states “The chief whip of the house is hereby suspended on Saturday,15th of April 2023 till further notice and the deputy Chief Whip takes charge of his constitutional duties and he will be invited in the next plenary session for fair hearing”.
In the same vein, Hon. Arilewo representing the 300level, Linguistics and African languages department has also forfeited his membership of the house due to his absence from the plenary session for three consecutive times.
“Any honourable member that miss sitting for three consecutive times without seeking the permission of the speaker shall automatically forfeit his membership. A letter of notification will be sent to the president of Linguistics department and they will present another representative from the constituency which may still be the same person”. The Speaker said.
