FLC declares AFAS President’s action as “abuse of power”, demands letter of apology to the house and Afasites

Faculty of Arts’ legislative council declared the decision of the AFAS President, Akinyoola Emmanuel in the recent suspension of the association’s Assistant General Secretary as an abuse of power and unconstitutional.

In a plenary session that was held on the 26th of April, 2023 at the Mike Okiro centre, the house maintained that no elected officers in the faculty can be impeached by any other arm except the FLC and or the Congress.

Hon Nnamdi from music constituency that AFAS President should be issued a caution and be asked to write an apology letter in accordance with the AFAS constitution, Article 46, section B (i) in which if he is found wanting of any misconduct, he should vacate his office. This motion was seconded by Hon Akingbade from the theatre arts constituency.

However, Hon Azeezat from AIS constituency raised a counter motion which was seconded by Hon Janet that the president should be suspended for a week. In the absence of a subsidiary motion, the house conducted a secret voting process with 14 honourable members.
8 members supported the first motion, 5 members for the second motion and there was one void vote.

According to the Speaker, Rt. Hon Akindejoye, the AFAS President should write an apology letter to the honourable house and the public within 24hours effective from 6:20pm for the abuse of power.

“In line with the constitution,the president shall hereby be issued caution formal or written, documented in the house and he should write an apology letter to this honourable house and the Afasites. If he is found wanting if any wrongdoing, he shall be impeached by the honourable house”.

The house also described the act of duplication of key by the AGS as illegal and punishable. The Speaker then charged the house Investigative Committe to look into the matter of duplication of key by the AGS.
