The Audit and Finance Committee of the Association of Faculty of Arts Students (AFAS) in conjunction with the Faculty Legislative Council (FLC), has declared that it found the Ex-director of Welfare and Social Services, Elijah Oluwagbenga Richard (Kieran), guilty of financial mismanagement, misappropriation and unaccountability after its Audit Session on July 12, 2023.

This was made known in a public statement dated July 14, 2023, signed by the Speaker of AFAS FLC, Rt. Hon. Olasoji Akindejoye and announced by the FLC spokesperson, Hon Janet Meziem.

In the statement, it was stated that Elijah refused to appear before the Audit and Finance Committee for auditing on AFAS week after several attempts had been made to reach out to him which led to the consequent intervention of the FLC.

“To this refusal, the FLC intervened and called for a joint auditing session, where it was found that a sum of ₦101,150 was unaccounted for under the care of the aforementioned.” the statement read.

The FLC further affirmed in the statement that the finding is not groundless as it is based on a well-rounded investigation and also, the inconsistencies and mismanagement witnessed in the handling of finances during AFAS week unequivocally supports the claim.

The FLC added that “A letter of refund was issued to him but was met with unresponsiveness, which can only mean that Mr Richard refuses to acknowledge his wrongdoing nor take accountability for it.”

According to the Public Statement released, the House has handed him over to the higher authority and he has been given 5 working days to make a refund.

The House concluded that it has no choice but to act in adherence with the stipulation of the AFAS Constitution which provides that “Any officer of the association found guilty of financial mismanagement and misappropriation shall automatically forfeit his office and shall henceforth be banned from holding any office and stand expelled from the association.”
