Group Petitions UI SU on Failure to Hold Congress, Gives Four-day Ultimatum

A group of concerned students in the University of Ibadan has written a petition to the University of Ibadan Students’ Union (UISU) over its failure to convene a general meeting.

This is contained in a letter dated October 3, 2023, jointly signed by four members of the group: Aduwo Ayodele, Adediran Faith, Olajide Olawale, and Linus Nice Adaoma.

The letter which was premised on the need to ensure the welfare of the students stated that the group had earlier written a letter to the Students Union with almost 250 signatories calling for Congress which the union acknowledged but refused to heed the call.

“Hinged on the need to check in on the general welfare of students of the University of Ibadan, a letter demanding for Congress with over 250 signatories as provided for in Article thirteen of the Student’s Union constitution was acknowledged by the student’s union on the 25th of August, 2023. That the Student’s Union has flagrantly refused to heed the call for a Congress, we find this refusal unconstitutional and unbecoming of people who are purportedly representing the interests of students”, the letter read.

Meanwhile, the group demanded that the Congress should be held within four working days, taking effect from the date on the letter, and any further refusal to resolve the issue would lead to a “peaceful demonstration at the Kunle Adepeju Memorial Student Union Building”.
