SIGMA UI Set to Hold 2024 Roseline Etuokwu National Quiz Competition

In preparation for the upcoming 2024 Roseline Etuokwu Sigma National Secondary Schools Quiz Competition, Sigma Club, University of Ibadan has on Sunday, November 5, 2023, held a press conference at the Alumni centre, University of Ibadan.

According to the Sigma Chief, Eniola Moses, a 400 level student of the Department of Linguistics and African languages, the main objective of the press conference is to make a wide publicity for the 2024 Roseline Etuokwu Sigma National Secondary Schools Quiz competition.

He revealed that although the last edition of the competition was limited to the Southwest region, the upcoming edition will cut across 6,000 secondary schools in the 774 local governments in Nigeria.

“The 2024 competition is set to go national under the leadership of the current Sigma Chief, Eniola Moses, a 400 level student of the department of Linguistics, University of Ibadan, with over 20,000 students from 6,000 secondary schools across Nigeria’s 774 local governments expected to participate”.

He appreciated the generousity and continuous sponsorship of the founder of Rams Charity Foundation, Old Sigmite Victor Etuokwu from the beginning of the competition in 2021.

“Thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Rams Charity Foundation who has been the sponsor from 2021 up till date.”

Also, the Sigma chief made it known that the transportation, accommodation and feeding of the students and schools are to be covered by the Sigma Club.

The committee chairman for the quiz competition, Loyalist Olaouwa Olagoke, stressed the critical role of the media in disseminating information as regards the competition.

“There’s a need to involve the media in what we are doing, for adequate publicity. We cannot achieve the aims and objective of the competition without the media.”

Loyalist Olaouwa noted that the aim of the national quiz competition is to keep the students on the right path before they get admission into the tertiary institution. It would serve as a compass for making informed choices as they aspire to pursue higher education.

Highlighting the criteria of the competition, the chairman emphasized on maintaining gender equality among the participants, in which every mixed school will be represented by a boy and a girl.

He explained that the competition is going to be CBT-based, to encourage, train and breed computer literate students. He also mentioned that the questions will be on Mathematics, English and general knowledge.

He noted that there will be no registration fee whatsoever, as schools are to participate free of charge, the only requirement being that the schools are registered at the Ministry of Education in the states.

He further stated that the club is going to reach out to the Ministry of Education, Association of Schools’ Principals, and other stakeholders in the Education sector to ensure huge participation of schools from all nook and cranny of the country. Moreover, the national quiz competition will offer a total amount of 8million naira cash prizes to the winners.

The competition will be in three stages—state, regional, and national. The winners of the state category, including the federal capital territory, will receive 100,000 naira prize each, the regional winners will receive 250,000 naira each while the 6th, 5th and 4th positions will get 100,000 naira consolation prizes each.

In addition, the winner of the national third position will receive 500,000 naira cash prize, 2nd position gets 750,000 naira, while the ultimate winner of the national quiz competition will receive the large sum of 1million naira.
