UCJ UI Partners with AFYMP to Organize Journalism Workshop

The Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan (UCJ UI) in conjunction with Africa Foundation for Young Media Professionals (AFYMP), held a workshop on “Reporting for Impact” on Saturday 4th November, 2023.

The Executive Director, AFYMP, Mr. Yinka Olaito, spoke on building a world class profile in journalism in which he asserted that, although the journalism profession is saturated, there are opportunities for newbies who are devoted to learning and are consistent in releasing impactful contents.

Mr. Olaito affirmed that continuous self-improvement is key to standing out in the industry, adding that those that are new to journalism should ensure that the need to earn income is not their driving force.

“Don’t do journalism just because of the money, because you will leave when the money doesn’t come your way”, he said.

He further stated that having a clear picture of where one is headed is essential in the journalistic terrain, as there is no overnight success in the industry.

The media practitioner reiterated that campus journalists need to ensure they consider journalistic ethics in their practice, and build capacity towards attaining a world class profile.

Speaking on “The Power of Indigenous Languages in Media”, Damilola Fajinmi, a Broadcast Journalist, advised the campus journalists to expand their horizon by exploring the use of indigenous languages in journalism to distinguish themselves from others.

“Expand your horizon and don’t be a one track person. Indigenous languages are very important because it builds and sustains a connection with the audience.”

Mrs Fajinmi also highlighted tips for effective reporting, including accuracy and clarity, emotional intelligence, sensitivity and respect, cultural sensitivity and ethical considerations.
