Nigeria vs Guinea-Bissau: Did You Know?
Efe Ikhenaode
Did you know that Nigeria’s Super Eagles won a match against Guinea Bissau and managed to secure a win to progress into the knockout stages of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), that is, Nigeria went through to the Round of 16? Although they progress as runners-up behind Equatorial Guinea, leaving the Super Eagles to face the second-placed team in Group C, which will be one of Cameroon, Senegal or Guinea.
Anyway, enough with the sports jargon! Let us go through a small survey/trivia of just how many AFASites were aware that Nigeria had just won, much less partook in a match.
Bolu, a European Studies student, commented “I know Nigeria had a match, but I didn’t know it was with Guinea-Bissau”. She also confessed that she didn’t know what game/tournament was being played.
Mojuba from Linguistics also seemed not to be aware of the match. However, he believes that awareness can be encouraged among students by participation in sports at various levels.
Olabisi, a student of History, however, was aware of the match. She found out through the news media and followed the proceedings.
Ayomikun, an Anthropology student, was also not aware. She admitted to her lack of interest towards football.
Concerning awareness, responses ranged from yes to no to “What’s that?” And unfortunately, there were more ‘Nos’ than ‘Yesses’ which says a lot about the majority’s enthusiasm towards sports.
However, it’s never too late to put in enough effort towards building a positive attitude towards sports and culture. Stay fit and stay informed this new semester!
