Hon. Susan Olalusi Resigns From AFAS FLC

The suspended honourable member representing the constituency of 200-level students,  Hon. Susan Olalusi, has submitted a resignation letter, officially denouncing her membership from the Association of Faculty of Arts Legislative Council, due to the circumstances that led to her indefinite suspension.

In the letter dated February 27, 2024, which was made available to AFAS Press, Hon. Susan highlighted the decision of the House to involve the Sub-Dean to compel the students to pay the basic faculty dues as one of the issues that led to her suspension.

“I, Olalusi Susan Ikeoluwaposi, is officially resigning from the Faculty Legislative Council, due to the turn of events recently, which included the House’s decision to bring the Sub-Dean to make students pay the faculty dues. I kicked against this because I believe that as the FLC, it is not right to bring the Sub-Dean into such delicate issues as faculty basic dues, because everyone knows how the country is and some students haven’t even paid their school fees. In fact, we took a vote initially, in which 6 honourable members voted against bringing the Sub-Dean in and 5 voted for it. We won by simple majority,” the letter read.

Describing the decision of the Acting Speaker that they should provide a solution as “autocratic” and “partial”, she noted that she was not satisfied, which prompted her to raise the issue during the AOB of the House’s sitting.

According to her, she was unjustly suspended for standing for a right cause which did not violate any provisions of the constitution. She also noted that the House did not follow a due process as she did not appear before a disciplinary committee before her suspension.

“First of all, I was unjustly suspended from the house for trying to uphold the morals and that which I believe to be right. In the resolution of the House, the House claimed that they found me guilty of going against Chapter 8, Article 47 Section A, which states the offences and discipline.

Also before suspending a person indefinitely, I believe it’s only right that I face a disciplinary committee but I faced none. One thing I would conclude is that I was being bullied because some people feel like they have the majority power to do as they like.” the letter read in part.

She also stated that her primary assignment as a member of the FLC is to protect the interests of the members of her constituency, therefore any hindrance to that is sufficient for her to resign.

“light of this, I resign from the FLC, because my primary purpose there is to defend the rights of the 200 level History department students, and if I am not allowed to defend this right, I don’t see any reason why I should remain there.”
