UCJ UI Holds 35th Induction Ceremony

The Union of Campus Journalists (UCJ), University of Ibadan held its 35th induction ceremony at the First Bank Building, Faculty of Agriculture, on the 24th of February, 2024. 

The induction ceremony which was themed “Beyond Bylines” witnessed the oath-taking of 238 new campus journalists. 

In his speech, the keynote speaker, Dr. Lasisi Olagunju, represented by Dr. Oyetimi, advised the newly inducted members to write impactful stories and uphold the ethics of journalism. He emphasized the essence of a byline, which is the reputation of a journalist.

Mr Kabir Adejumo, an award-winning investigative journalist, talked about the Challenges of Impact Journalism. He stressed the fact that journalism is a “thankless job” for those who have joined journalism to amass wealth. 

Also, he encouraged the newly inducted members to develop the habit of curiosity to discover the root of every matter of public interest.

While speaking on the topic “Does AI Threaten Job Security in Journalism?”, a former president of UCJ UI, Mr Matthew Isaac, stressed the fact that AI cannot replace Journalism because it is about humans and only humans can understand it deeply and write it as accurately and representatively.

“It makes work easier but not replace it, AI cannot do investigative journalism. It’d threaten the job of those who have refused to measure up. Only claims that have valid evidence get published. AI will not edit the libels nor recognise defamation.”
