The University of Ibadan Student’s Union has on Tuesday called on the Federal Government of Nigeria not to jettison all remaining elements of welfarism left in the country including but not limited to the subsidization of education in public tertiary education.

The Union made this call on Tuesday in a statement release signed the Aweda Bolaji and Ogundijo Japheth, the Union’s President and General Secretary, to show solidarity with striking workers under the aegis of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress.

We use this opportunity to reiterate that every government exists ultimately to protect the welfare of its citizens. We therefore condemn the recent move by the government to jettison all remaining elements of welfarism left in the country including but not limited to the subsidization of education in public tertiary education,” the statement reads.

The Union also called on the Nigeria Labour Congress and other relevant stakeholders to stand with the Nigerian Students to resist “this evasive act of the federal government aimed at commodifying the educational sector, and by implication, the future of the country”.
