AFAS FLC Announces Procedures for Bye-Election

The Association of Faculty of Arts Students’ Faculty Legislative Council (AFAS FLC) has announced the procedure and guidelines for the bye election agreed at its sitting to fill vacant offices in the executive council of the faculty.

The Faculty Legislative made this known in a release signed by the speaker, Rt. Hon. Olajide Miqdad and announced by the council spokesperson, Hon. Lawal Abdul-Qayyum Kayode. In the release, the house asserted that “The bye-election shall solely focus on the three vacant posts in the faculty and the three vacant offices are hence listed: (i) The Office of the Vice-President (ii) The Office of the Financial Secretary (iii) The Office of the Director of Sports”.

The FLC declared that an Electoral College comprising fifteen (15) AFASites will conduct the bye-election. “The electoral college will comprise 15 members: 12 Members – A representative from each constituency/department in the faculty. Two FLC Representatives and A Press Member,” adding that “the member representing a department must be a neutral individual” having no political affiliations.

The FLC mentioned that to enhance accountability and transparency, “the Electoral College shall be the one to partake in the entirety of the bye-election processes such as screening, voting, etc. They shall be the ones with the voting rights in the bye-election.”

In the release, the House also affirmed that “the bye-election shall be done in accordance with the AFAS constitution. The Qualified Candidates to run for the Vacant Posts: As stated by the Constitution, only financial members (members that have paid their AFAS basic dues) are qualified to run for any of the three vacant posts. There is however a level clause attached to this, the candidates to run must be in 200 level and above.”

The FLC urges all interested candidates to adhere to the guidelines of the Bye-election. And mentioned a 3-point guideline that must be judiciously obeyed to avoid disqualification from the electioneering process as(i). No form of physical campaign that disturbs the activities of the faculty is allowed. (ii) No pasting of posters and/or fliers within the faculty premises. (iii) Further directives will be made available by the electoral college once formed and must be duly adhered to.
