The Students’ Union Electoral Commission, University of Ibadan (SUECUI), has announced that the ban on electoral activities would be lifted on Saturday, 18th of January, 2025.

SUECUI announced this development in a release e-signed by Olanrewaju Osiga, the Chairman of the Publicity Committee, and Olaniyi Dolapo, the Chairman of the Logistics Committee.

The outlined events for the 2023/2024 Students’ Executive Council election to herald the 2025 administration included: Lift of the Ban on Saturday 18, January 2025; Collection and submission of nomination forms from Monday 20th Jan. to Friday 31st January, 2025; Screening exercise for candidates on Saturday 15, February 2025; Press Night Wednesday 19th Feb, 2025; Speech/Manifesto Night Friday 21, February 2025; S.E.C Election Saturday 22nd Feb, 2025.

The release also included electioneering activities for the Students’ Representative Council; Collection and Submission of Nomination forms is scheduled for Monday 27th January to Monday 24th February, 2025; screening exercise for candidates, Tuesday 25 Feb to Wednesday 26 Feb 2025; S.R.C Election Saturday 01 March, 2025.

The commission’s release read in part, “All electoral campaigns and related activities must comply strictly with the electoral guidelines as provided by the electoral commission” urging “everyone to embrace this electoral season with a sense of responsibility and integrity to uphold the democratic principles of our institution.”

Recall that contrary to what is obtainable in an ideal democratic setting, where the proposed members of the electoral committee are screened and ratified by the students union legislative arm, the committee members are handpicked, unknown to students and the committee is headed by a non-student, the Deputy Registrar, a member of the University management.
